ORTZAI is a repertory theatre company, founded in 2005, based in Vitoria Gasteiz (Basque Country, Spain), deeply committed to artistic and personal growth through Theatre. ORTZAI considers Theatre as a precious tool to reinforce communities and society and so, always according to the highest artistic self-demand parameters, ORTZAI has taken onto stage issues such as peace, gender equality, ecology, social equality, respect and mutual enrichment amongst different cultures and languages… ORTZAI´s deep compromise is easily perceived in all our productions, based on classic and contemporary texts.
ORTZAI´s actors have a great sense of commitment. Our productions are addressed to audiences of any age, always trying to spread intergenerational reflection and debate.
The goal of ORTZAI is to maintain a permanent repertory company, with a common language and a deep sense of commitment to the artistic, social values and principles involved.
These years, thanks to that permanent crew, ORTZAI has staged titles such as Roswitha de Gardensheim´s “Calimachus”, “The Small One”, Voltaire´s “Candide”, Henry Van Dyke´s “The Story of the Other Wise Man”, Lope de Vega´s “The Widow in the Darkness” (adaptation of “The Widow of Valencia”), Goethe´s “Iphigenie in Tauride”, Iker Ortiz de Zarate´s “Vittoria”, Iker Ortiz de Zarate´s adaptation of the Bible book “Job”, with the title “Job, rehearsal for a crisis”, Sade´s “Justine or the Misfortunes of Virtue”, Wilde´s “Salome”, Beaumarchais´ “The Marriage of Figaro”, Carlo Gozzi´s “The Green Bird”, Anouilh´s “Beckett or the Honour of God”, “In the Mood for Love”, based on a text by Basque author Juan Perez de Lazarraga, Shakespeare´s “Antony and Cleopatra”, Wilde´s “De Profundis”, Iker Ortiz de Zarate´s “¿Y ahora? So now?” and Jean Giraudoux´s “The Madwoman of Chaillot”.
Also, always taking care of audiences of all ages, ORTZAI has staged several pantomimes, importing this genre of Theatre by the very first time ever to the Basque Country in 2007, and reaching an acclaimed balance between the old pantomime tradition and a new conception of it, considered by some as a complete and yet loyal renewal of Pantomime.
